About the Artwork

This black and white elephant art starts in the dark and lets the light do the talking. Derek Holt turned the elephant slightly left in a three-quarter view, then raked a single hard light across its brow, cheek and the broad fan of its ear. The tusks catch the brightest highlights, and the trunk curls down into shadow.

It's a textured elephant painting in the truest sense. Every crack and ridge of the skin was built up with a palette knife, so the thick ridges of paint read like real hide. Behind the animal, loose knife strokes of charcoal and pale gray break up the darkness without ever pulling focus from that calm, watchful eye.

This is an elephant painting for people who love wildlife wall art but want something quieter than a sunset safari scene. Collectors of animal studies, fans of monochrome interiors and anyone who keeps an elephant close for luck will find a lot to look at here.

As elephant canvas wall art, it holds its own above a sofa or a console, and it makes strong elephant wall art for living room spaces with gray, black or warm wood tones. Go with a large size for a dining room or a stair landing where the texture can be seen up close.

The knife goes in loaded, and I drag it until the oil stands up in a ridge, then scrape the edge back clean. That is the same push and pull I used with a steel trowel as a concrete finisher. I keep to black, white and greys, and let thin drips run down loose backgrounds.
