Talia Monroe

In Talia Monroe’s first Austin apartment, sharp angular shadows crept across the walls every afternoon. Monroe sketched them over and over, then started painting them, and those shapes became the base for everything since. A former yoga instructor with a BFA from CalArts, Monroe still works in Austin, Texas.

The work is abstract and geometric, built from stacked rectangles, overlapping rings and thin gold lines. Some pieces stay soft, in blush, cream and dusty rose. Others fit burnt orange, navy and olive together like puzzle pieces, or set black and white circles against checkerboard patterns. Charcoal ribbons twist through a few of the quieter designs.
