“My tía Rosa's blue kitchen in Guadalajara was where I first mixed colors, stirring beans with wooden spoons. After years helping mothers bring life into the world, I needed something that was purely mine. Moving to New Mexico gave me the desert light I craved.”

About Ivanna

Ivanna Soltero’s first lessons in color came in an aunt’s blue kitchen in Guadalajara, with wooden spoons and pots of beans. After years as a midwife, Soltero wanted something purely personal. A move to New Mexico brought the desert light, and the artist now works in Albuquerque with an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Warm and full of sun, the work moves between impressionism and abstraction. Mexico is the constant subject: the Biblioteca Palafoxiana and Talavera pottery of Puebla, the narrow Callejón del Beso in Guanajuato and the turquoise water of Playa Delfines in Cancun. The shop’s favorite Soltero canvases are waiting below, printed on matte canvas and stretched over solid wood.
