“Layovers in Tokyo taught me about negative space in a way art school never could. After grounding myself in 2010, I found that same sense of floating suspension in abstract work. My pieces try to capture that feeling of being between destinations.”
Layovers in Tokyo gave Elena Vance an early lesson in negative space. The former flight attendant stopped flying in 2010 and found the same floating feeling in abstract work. Trained by a commercial artist, Vance now works in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on pieces about being between destinations.
The style is expressionist abstraction, with water and weather as steady themes. Storm light settles over the sea in the Azure Veil pair, where slate blue and cream blur the horizon. First Light on Water melts peach and pale green into a hazy dawn, and cherry blossoms frame soft peaks in Blossoms in Still Air. See below for the artist’s most popular canvases.
