Owen Strickland

Owen Strickland paints in a drafty garage studio in Duluth, Minnesota, a few blocks up the hill from Lake Superior. Before he picked up the brush full time, he worked as a land surveyor’s assistant, and the job taught him to read distance and to see how land layers back, ridge by ridge, toward the horizon. He later earned his BFA at the University of Minnesota Duluth, and that surveyor’s eye for space and quiet measurement still shapes every piece he makes.

Owen works in watercolor on heavy 300 lb rough paper. While the sheet is still soaked, he lays down soft washes of seafoam and pewter, then drops in a single dark line of pine. The lake fog does the rest, and he leaves the sky almost bare. The result is minimal, calm, and full of breathing room: northern shorelines and tree lines that feel like a cool morning on the water. His canvases suit bedrooms, bathrooms, reading corners, and living rooms with light woods and soft neutrals, anywhere a wall could use a little stillness. Below are Strickland’s canvases in our shop, ready to hang.

This watercolor nativity keeps the story small and quiet. Owen Strickland painted a single wooden stable on a snowy slope, its open front holding a soft gold glow that spills down a worn path into the snow. A tiny star hangs in the misty sky above, and white flecks of paint drift across the hillside like falling snow.

The washes do most of the work here. Cream and pale gray bleed into each other, pine trees dissolve into fog, and the stable itself is built from a few wet strokes of brown and gray. It reads as a nativity scene painting stripped down to light, shelter and winter air, a holy night painting without a crowd of figures.

It suits anyone who wants minimalist nativity art that feels calm rather than busy, and families who like their Christmas decor wall hanging to say something about the season beyond tinsel. Fans of a gentle star of Bethlehem painting will find that little point of light rewards a second look.

As canvas wall art, it works as Christmas wall art for living room spaces above a sofa or mantel, and the soft neutrals sit easily in a farmhouse entry or a cozy reading corner. This nativity canvas print stays warm and understated all winter long.

Jessie's Home
36" x 24" / No
